Community Service Hours

Community Service Hours Required of Certain Scholarship Recipients

Many students who receive a renewable scholarship is required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service per academic year regardless of when the scholarship is awarded.

The purpose of requiring service is to foster a long-lasting, service-minded dedication to citizenship. You will have the opportunity to give back to others in your local community in the same manner as you have received a scholarship from a generous donor. Volunteering also allows you to develop new skills and to network, which can assist you as you seek to begin a career in the near future.

Renewable scholarship recipients have from August 1 to May 1 each year while on scholarship to fulfill their community service requirement, averaging out to 2-5 hours per month depending on when the scholarship is awarded. After completing service hours, you will submit those hours for approval via an online system where you can track submissions and approvals as you go.

  • The 20-hour community service requirement is flexible: you have the choice to partner with a variety of organizations local to your community. Examples of pre-approved organizations are listed below.
  • The following opportunities are examples of activities that do not count toward the community service requirement: door-to-door solicitations, research assistantships, lab work, or other positions where the student may be receiving compensation.
  • If you need help finding volunteer opportunities, https://shareomaha.org/ is a great resource. Not all of the opportunities listed on this website are pre-approved. Please be sure to get approval from the Scholarships & Grants Department prior to completing any opportunities found through this website.

Please Note: Students should receive approval from the Scholarships & Grants Department prior to completing their required hours. The Scholarships & Grants Department reserves the right to evaluate the legitimacy of completed service work on an individual basis. Students will be notified immediately upon submission of community service hours if they do not meet the necessary requirements.
