The Bellevue University SUDTE program is approved by NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals. This important recognition means that the contact hours or CEUs earned will be accepted toward national credentialing by the NAADAC Certification Commission.
Advanced Continuing Education students: Must be a Nebraska resident* and possess a high school diploma or equivalent or hold a current license as an LADC.

This is a 15-hour introductory workshop in Motivational Interviewing. Participants will be able to identify and utilize basic communication skills and strategies of Motivational Interviewing. They will gain an understanding of the history of MI, acquire skills and understanding of the MI spirit, obtain a working knowledge of the OARS active listening skills as well as learning and practicing "change talk" tools.
This 15-hour training focuses on advancing MI skills learned in Phase I training. Participants will practice skills needed when dealing with client resistance to change. This includes specific and advanced strategies focused on the complex reflections and resistant from clients, apply stage of change levels corresponding to MI application. Participant skill development will focus on adapting the MI interview skills to learning and applying associated change plan development, implementation, and consolidation of the client’s commitment to change and action. This will include personalized feedback and access to additional MI resources to continue to strengthen their MI skills.

Effective Communication Consultant/President, Motivate 2 Communicate, LLC
Brenda Jennings formed her own company, Motivate 2 Communicate, LLC, in 2012, to pursue her passion of inspiring client long-term behavior change, after 12 years working for the Nebraska Supreme Court as a probation officer and trainer. Jennings’ company offers tailored certified trainings and curriculum development in behavior change, motivational interviewing, evidence-based practices, trauma informed care, risk/needs assessments, case planning, personality assessments, and leadership enhancement. She is a highly sought after trainer and guest speaker. Jennings is also a full-time Criminal Justice faculty member and online lead at Metro Community College, an adjunct instructor with University of Nebraska Omaha and Lincoln Criminal Justice Departments, Creighton University Social Work Department, and Bellevue University’s Continuing Education. Brenda holds over a dozen nationally recognized training certifications, has authored 4 prison inmate behavior change curriculums and is member of the highly esteemed international network of Motivational Interviewing trainers, MINT. Her undergraduate degree is in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Midland University and her master’s degree is in Health Communication and Non-profit Management from Johns Hopkins University. Brenda also enjoys volunteering with CASA, Women’s Fund of Omaha, and as a board member of the Heartland Juvenile Services Association.

Jack Nelson received his Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Nebraska – Omaha with a focus on nonprofit management and an undergraduate degree in Business/Vocational Education from the University of Northern Iowa. Nelson has over 30 years of experience working and teaching in nonprofit organizations including in childcare, healthcare, and education. He has been an adjunct professor for Bellevue University in the College of Arts and Sciences since 2005 and also teaches in the College of Business undergraduate Nonprofit Management program.
Currently, Nelson is the Program Manager who oversees contracts and special programs within the Community of Practice focused on behavioral health in Bellevue University Continuing Education. Other experiences that provided a foundation for his career include roles as an Organizational Development Consultant for a regional healthcare organization, a Director of Programs for a childcare agency and as Program Consultant working with small and medium nonprofit childcare organizations focused on program development.
